In our organization, we take a great deal of pride in the startup and onboarding support that we provide our new franchise owners to make sure we set you up for success. Our team of Franchising Managers and Program Specialists are here to help you launch your business with a strong start in every aspect – from finding your perfect location and store build-out, through to recruiting and training your dreamteam of Vacation Consultants.

With over 255 Expedia CruiseShipCenters open and 25 new Centers opened in 2017, we recognize the importance of having a strong team to help with the startup, on-boarding and launch of each location. That’s why we have dedicated teams at our Corporate Support office who are committed to providing all of the help you need to feel confident in each step of launching your new business.

Let’s explore in more detail the startup and onboarding support we provide to set our franchise owners on the path to success.

Phase 1: Startup Support

You’ll begin the first step of the startup process immediately following the signing of your Franchise Agreement. Your Franchise Development Manager will introduce you to the Startup and Onboarding team by conference call, kicking off your search for your perfect location. The Startup team will be your go-to resource to get your space ready for customers from location search and selection to the design and build out of your franchise. With the assistance of a third party real estate company, the Startup team will work with you to find the perfect location that ticks all of the boxes for great accessibility for customers and staff, strong visibility in your community, and a large enough space to accommodate a hub of activity. During this step, you’ll also receive guidance though the application process for the necessary licensing needed to operate a travel business in your community.

This process can be the longest component of your setup but the goal is to have your doors open within nine months of signing your franchise agreement. Remember, we’re in this together and our team will be there to help guide and support you every step of the way.

Phase 2: Onboarding Support

The second step of launching your new travel franchise is onboarding and recruitment. This encompasses everything to do with recruiting and training your dream team of Vacation Consultants, to managing operations and growing your business. An important step in your training will be learning the how to sell travel as a Vacation Consultant so that you can successfully train and support your future team. During your onboarding, you’ll also attend our week-long intensive franchisee training program called Cruise Management Academy at our corporate headquarters where you’ll learn Expedia CruiseShipCenters’ tools, systems and support that will help you manage your team while you grow your business. By the time you open your doors, the goal is to have at least 15 Vacation Consultants trained and ready to sell travel to your community.

The culmination of your efforts will be opening your doors for business and planning your Grand Opening event! From that point onward you’ll receive ongoing support from your Franchise Performance Coach and team at the Corporate Support office as you run the day to day operations of your travel business. Our goal is to set you up for success and provide ongoing coaching and support as you build and grow your Expedia CruiseShipCenters franchise.

Your steps to becoming an Expedia Franchise Partner


Investing in Expedia® CruiseShipCenters® should be the best business decision you will ever make. That’s why we take the steps necessary to ensure that awarding the franchise and entering that partnership together will be mutually rewarding. Our knowledgeable Franchise Advisors will work with you every step of the way as you complete our in-depth Franchise Discovery Process.

Our Franchise Discovery Process is designed to educate potential franchise owners like yourself through educational content, videos, webinars and phone calls. This process typically can be completed in as few as 30 days and consists of three distinct phases that encompass our six step education process.

Phase One: Exploration

It all begins with a phone call, our Franchise Advisors, Jeff Warkentin and Daniel Meyer, will reach out to you to discuss your business ownership goals, experience and desired financial investment. It’s a great opportunity for you to ask any initial questions you have regarding the Expedia franchise opportunity. If it sounds like a great fit for you, we’ll invite you to attend our live introductory webinar that will provide an informative overview of our franchise opportunity.

Phase Two: Education

Our next phase is your opportunity to dig deeper into the prospect of franchise ownership as well as the tools and support you’ll receive along the way.

You’ll learn about the four pillars of our franchise operating system:
Recruitment & Onboarding – how you’ll recruit, grow, and train your team of Vacation Consultants.

Leadership & Recognition
– how you’ll lead, develop, and inspire your team of Vacation Consultants.

– our award-winning marketing programs and exclusive offers to serve your community with.

Planning & Performance
– the tools and resources we provide you to successfully manage and operate your business.

Once you’ve completed this education phase on our operating system and are interested in pursuing owning your own Expedia CruiseShipCenters, we’ll invite you to complete a confidential qualification form. At this point, you’ll also receive our Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) to review.

Phase Three: Validation

You’ll attend a live Q&A call with Expedia CruiseShipCenters President, Matthew Eichhorst, in our Franchise Discovery Process.

The third and final phase includes a live Q&A call with our President and Head of Global Cruise for Expedia GroupTM, Matthew Eichhorst. Another important step in your due diligence in phase three, is conducting validation calls with a few of our existing Franchise Owners to hear directly from them on their experience and words of wisdom. After you’ve attended our President’s call and completed your validation calls, we’ll invite you to the Expedia CruiseShipCenters corporate office in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia to attend Discovery Day. There you’ll meet members of the Senior Leadership Team and prepare to set sail on the business adventure of a lifetime!

Jeff Warkentin, Franchise Advisor

Jeff has worn many different hats at Expedia CruiseShipCenters. As a former Franchise Owner turned Franchise Performance Coach with Expedia CruiseShipCenters, Jeff has experienced all sides of our brand’s proven system. Prior to joining the Corporate Support team, Jeff purchased an under-performing Expedia CruiseShipCenters location in 2007 and grew it into a top 10 franchise in our system before selling it three years later. Jeff now uses his wealth of knowledge on the Expedia CruiseShipCenters model to excite candidates about how they too can realize their entrepreneurial dreams and build equity in a fun, growing industry, just like he did.

What advice would you give to candidates? My advice to candidates is to choose a business that’s going to align with your lifestyle and long-term plan. If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work again!

What’s your favorite destination you’ve visited? My wife and I took a Paul Gauguin cruise to the Cook Islands and it was like we were traveling undiscovered land, it is truly stunning. I would highly recommend it if you’re looking to explore the South Pacific.

Where is your next dream vacation? I’d really like to see France and do a river cruise through the Bordeaux region. Wine sampling, great food and good company sounds like a dream.

Daniel Meyer, Franchise Advisor

Daniel joined Expedia CruiseShipCenters in 2014 and continues his successful career in franchise development. He combines his Master’s in Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Communications with more than 20 years of experience in sales management, and business development. As a previous Franchise Owner and Franchise Development Manager with Tutor Doctor, he has a deep understanding of both franchising and business and has a passion for helping people find the right opportunity to meet their personal and financial goals.

What advice would you give to candidates? I’d tell candidates to choose an industry that encompasses a passion of theirs (i.e. travel or education) and understand that the day to day role is something you can get excited about.

What’s your favorite destination you’ve visited? One of my favorite places I’ve visited is the Moselle River in Germany on a river cruise. There was so much history, architecture and WINE! One afternoon we floated past 35 Castles. I went to Prague on the same trip and it was an amazingly beautiful city.

Where is your next dream vacation? This summer I’m going to Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris. I’ve been planning the trip for a while and I’m excited to see each of those cities.

His background in computer science led to rewarding career in high-tech sales and owning a small merchant services business in Southern California. He discovered the Expedia CruiseShipCenters franchise opportunity when he was searching for a new challenge where could utilize his skills and be his own boss. Rene and his family enjoy having an active lifestyle as well as exploring the world and looking for new adventures. In June of 2017 Rene opened his Center in sunny San Diego, CA.

Ram Venkat – Plano, TX

Franchise owner, Ram Venkat, and his family moved from Southern California to Texas before opening his Expedia CruiseShipCenters location in Plano, TX. Ram has an impressive background working in the IT industry for over 15 years holding positions as an IT consultant, VP of application development and IT program Manager. Eric and Sharon Hickman – Lakeland, GA

Franchise owners, Eric and Sharon Hickman, opened their Expedia CruiseShipCenters location in October 2017 in Lakeland, GA. Eric is a skilled entrepreneur, with a 14-year career working in manufacturing operations and global supply chain as well as operating and selling several smaller businesses along the way. Sharon is an experienced teacher, working in both the public and private school systems. Successfully home-schooling their children and sending the youngest off to University Eric and Sharon were ready to pursue their next entrepreneurial endeavor together as franchise owners. Going into business for yourself can be overwhelming but a huge benefit of joining forces with a proven franchise system like Expedia CruiseShipCenters is that the guess work is eliminated for you! We’ll be with you every step of the way to ensure you’re confident in operating every aspect of your own Center. The capstone of your New Franchise Partner training and onboarding is attending Cruise Management Academy (CMA) before opening your doors. This multi-day training is held at our corporate headquarters in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. CMA is designed to teach and train Franchise Partners, through a hands-on training experience providing the steps and guides needed for success. At Cruise Management Academy you’ll take a deep dive into successfully operating the Expedia CruiseShipCenters system but before attending CMA we’ll build your foundation together.

Your Path to Opening

To begin your path to opening you’ll be introduced to key members of our Franchise Start Up and Onboarding teams after signing your franchise agreement. They’ll guide you through everything, from finding and building out the perfect location in your community to teaching you how to run your business using our industry leading technology, CruiseDesk. We empower our Franchise Partners with the tools and resources to successfully recruit, coach and motivate a large team of Vacation Consultants. Our 125+ person corporate team is here to support you and you can call us at any time.

Cruise Management Academy in a nutshell

About a month before you open your doors for business you’ll attend our week-long intensive training, CMA, with fellow Franchise Partners close to opening. Over the course of the week, you’ll be introduced to key members of our corporate team. Each member and their team will support you throughout your journey as an Expedia CruiseShipCenters franchise owner. CMA is a classroom setting encouraging collaboration amongst fellow franchisees and a space to master your training. The week will consist of informative presentations, engaging workshops and role playing. By the end of the week you’ll be confident in all areas of operating your own Expedia CruiseShipCenters and how you’ll utilize the tools and technology exclusively available to our Franchise Partners.

CMA attendees from Lakeland, GA; Saint John, NB; Courtice, ON.

We’ll cover a lot of territory and topics at CMA. An area of focus is recruitment, our experts will guide you through the process of hosting recruitment events and training and tips for managing your team of Vacation Consultants. We’ll supply tools such as training presentations and promotion education sessions that you can conduct with your team. You’ll use these seminars are to grow your Vacation Consultants’ knowledge, keep them engaged, and motivate them to continue generating more sales for themselves and in turn your Center overall.

You can expect a robust and engaging agenda everyday while attending CMA. By the end of the week you’ll be an expert in planning for your business, all types of travel products, how to best leverage public relations and effective ways to lead your team. All the tools and resources that you’ll use to grow a valuable and profitable business will be covered.

Counting Down to your Center Opening

The training doesn’t end when you leave our corporate office. Your Onboarding Manager will still support you to insure you and your Center is set up for opening day and all of your training is complete. When you are near your official opening you’ll be assigned an Franchise Performance Coach (FPC). Your FPC will be a dedicated coach delivering individualized and enhanced coaching specific to you and your Center on an ongoing basis. The role of your FPC is to serve as your business advisor providing insights into your Center performance through regular phone call check ins and in-Center visits.

We’re dedicated to providing in depth training and on-boarding to help you build a successful business applying our proven system. CMA is an opportunity for you to build relationships with our subject matter experts and connect with your fellow Franchise Partners at the same stage in the opening journey. The larger your team, the further your reach in the community and in turn the greater your customer base for follow ups and marketing initiatives. Keeping your team engaged, trained and motivated is essential to your success. To help you lead and motivate your team you’ll use our programs designed to help you coach and mentor your team with structured meetings, conversation guides and recognition programs created to support you in building positive relationships with your Consultants. How Expedia CruiseShipCenters’ culture of goal setting is driving record-breaking results for local franchise owners

Each year, Expedia CruiseShipCenters holds a National Conference for all of our franchise owners. We get together to communicate company updates, network, share best practices, and celebrate the organization’s continued growth and success over the past year. We hold this event on a 5-7 day cruise to experience the best that our incredible industry has to offer and reinvigorate our collective passion for this business.

The theme of this year’s National Conference was Leading the Way as we reflected back on our 30 years of success as innovators in the cruise and franchise industries. One of the highlights of our time together onboard is always our Presidents Circle Awards celebration where we take the time to recognize the amazing achievements of our franchise owners. This year’s awards event showcased our culture of celebration perfectly as our franchisees recognized the accomplishments of their colleagues with unbridled enthusiasm.

So why is franchisee recognition and goal setting so important to us at Expedia CruiseShipCenters? Here are three reasons:

Having a goal is extremely motivating.

Although there are some serious travel perks that come with being ranked among out top franchise owners (last year’s Diamond level winners received a free Oceania cruise in Europe!), the real motivator for our franchise owners is the sense of accomplishment they feel when they reach the goal they’ve set for their business.  That’s why we saw a record 28 locations this year who achieved the $6 Million single location booked sales threshold required to receive our coveted Presidents Circle Diamond award – the highest honor our franchise owners can receive. The fact that 8 more locations achieved the Diamond level in 2016 vs. 2015 shows the incredible potential for our franchisees to continuously grow their sales (and their business) even 10, 20 or 30 years after opening. Expedia CruiseShipCenters President, Matthew Eichhorst elaborates:

“When we first moved our franchisee recognition to a goal-based format, we received some push back from owners that $4 Million for the top Diamond level was too high. Now, just 6 years later, we have a record 28 locations achieving the $6 Million benchmark for Diamond. Our entire organization has benefited from this shift to goal-based recognition as we have drastically increased our average sales by franchise, all while growing the distribution channel from 120 locations to 235.”

When asked how the Presidents Circle program has impacted his business, Expedia CruiseShipCenters Franchise Owner and Diamond level winner from Petaluma, CA, Brian Murphy, said that it gives he and his brother James something to strive for.

“Having a benchmark definitely impacts the way we run our business,” said Brian. “We set goals, develop sales plans to meet those goals, and evaluate progress regularly. Having the opportunity to network with the other Diamond winners on the reward cruise was also very motivating, and has now inspired us to do even better.”

We think of them as check-in points along the path to profitability.
